Izmir Thyme: Origanum onites L.
Common Thyme: Origanum vulgare L.
The name "thyme" is used for more than one aromatic plant in Turkey. The scientific name of Izmir thyme is Origanum onites L., and the scientific name of common thyme is Origanum vulgare L.
Both species belong to the Lamiaceae family. Although the main components of their essential oils vary according to growing conditions and chemotype, carvacrol and thymol are among the most important compounds.
1. Shows Laboratory Activity Against Bacteria and Fungi
Thyme essential oil has been most extensively researched for its antimicrobial properties.
How Does It Do It?
Carvacrol and thymol can settle on the cell membrane of microorganisms thanks to their hydrophobic properties. By disrupting membrane permeability, they can cause loss of ions and cellular contents. The essential oils of Origanum species show activity against various bacteria and fungi in laboratory settings. In particular, carvacrol has been reported to have strong effects against foodborne pathogens [1–3].
Conclusion:
The fact that thyme oil suppresses microorganisms in the laboratory does not mean that it treats infections in humans on its own. It should not be used as a substitute for prescription treatments in pneumonia, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, or fungal diseases.

2. Has Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Potential
The effects of compounds such as carvacrol, thymol, and rosmarinic acid on free radicals and inflammation-related mechanisms are being investigated.
How Does It Do It?
These compounds can reduce the formation of reactive oxygen species and regulate the activity of some inflammatory enzymes or signaling molecules.
Extensive evaluations of carvacrol have reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, a significant portion of this data has been obtained from cell culture and animal experiments [2,4]. Conclusion:
Thyme can be a natural antioxidant source in the diet. However, it should not be considered a drug to treat chronic inflammatory diseases.

3. Its Effects on Skin and Wound Healing are Being Investigated
Origanum vulgare essential oil is being experimentally studied in the fields of dermatology and cosmetics.
How Does It Do It?
In cell studies with human keratinocytes, it has been reported that thyme essential oil can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation markers, and can affect cell migration and wound closure mechanisms [5].
In experimental studies related to acne, O. vulgare extract has been found to show activity against acne-related bacteria and inflammatory response [6]. These are not direct clinical treatment evidence. Conclusion:
It is not appropriate to apply thyme essential oil directly to open wounds or acne-prone skin. It can cause irritation and chemical burns. For dermatological use, diluted and safety-evaluated formulations should be preferred.

4. May Support the Digestive System
Thyme has traditionally been used for gas, indigestion, and bowel discomfort.
How Does It Do It?
It is thought that the essential oil components may have effects on intestinal smooth muscle, microbiota, and digestive secretions. However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited.
Conclusion:
Thyme used in cooking is generally safe. However, concentrated thyme oil does not have the same safety profile as the herb used as a spice.
Safe Use Note
Thyme essential oil should not be ingested undiluted and should not be applied directly to the skin. Excessive use may cause heartburn, nausea, and irritation in the mouth and esophagus.
