ST. JOHN'S WORT (Hypericum perforatum)
1. Relieves Mild to Moderate Depression (Antidepressant Effect)
St. John's wort is the most researched herbal agent in traditional medicine and modern psychopharmacology for stabilizing mood and alleviating symptoms of depression.
How Does It Do It? The plant's main active components, hypericin and hyperforin, strongly block the reuptake of neurotransmitters associated with happiness and motivation, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, in the brain. Clinical studies have proven that St. John's wort extract demonstrates similar efficacy to standard chemical antidepressants (SSRIs) thanks to this mechanism of action.
Result: It provides significant improvement in anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbances in cases of mild to moderate clinical depression. Its greatest advantage is that it has a much less severe side effect profile compared to synthetic antidepressants.

2. Repairs Wounds, Burns, and Skin Damage (Topical Tissue Regeneration)
The olive oil macerate form, commonly known as "St. John's wort oil," has been used for centuries as a first-aid agent for wound healing and tissue regeneration.
How Does It Work? St. John's wort components stimulate the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts (collagen-producing cells) to the injured area. It also activates endothelial growth factors, accelerating the formation of new capillaries (angiogenesis) in the wound area. Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it prevents wound infection, while its anti-inflammatory effect reduces pain and swelling.
Result: First and second-degree burns, bedsores (decubitus ulcers), surgical incisions, and sunburns heal much faster, minimizing the risk of scarring. It provides excellent results in restoring the skin barrier.

3. Provides Strong Neuroprotective and Anti-inflammatory Protection
St. John's wort provides protection not only for mental health but also at the cellular level in suppressing inflammatory processes in the central nervous system and throughout the body.
How Does It Do It? The rich flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin) and phenolic acids it contains are very powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals. By inhibiting (suppressing) the COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) and iNOS enzyme pathways that trigger inflammation at the cellular level, it protects nerve cells (neurons) from oxidative stress-related damage and premature death.
Result: It is effective in relieving painful conditions caused by chronic inflammation. In laboratory models, it shows neuroprotective potential against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

4. Creates an Antiviral and Antimicrobial Barrier
Modern medicine is closely examining the inhibitory power of St. John's wort extracts, particularly against enveloped viruses and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
How Does It Do It? The hypericin compound in the plant produces reactive oxygen species that damage the outer membrane structures of viruses and bacteria when exposed to light (photodynamic activation). This makes it difficult for viruses to attach to and replicate (multiply) in healthy host cells at the molecular level.
Result: In vitro (laboratory) studies have shown significant antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex (cold sore virus), Influenza (flu), and some hepatitis virus strains. It also offers a natural protective shield against Staphylococcus bacteria on the skin.

⚠️ A Golden Consumption and Safety Note
Critical Drug Interactions (Cytochrome P450 Warning): St. John's wort strongly stimulates the CYP3A4 enzyme system, which is responsible for the breakdown of drugs in the liver. This accelerates the breakdown of other concurrently used drugs in the body, rendering them ineffective. Individuals using birth control pills, blood thinners (Coumadin), cancer drugs, HIV drugs, immunosuppressants, and heart medications should absolutely not consume St. John's wort (oral) without consulting their doctor.
Risk of Serotonin Syndrome: Consuming St. John's wort pills or tea together with chemical antidepressants (SSRI or MAOI) can lead to an excessive accumulation of serotonin in the brain (Serotonin Syndrome), posing a life-threatening risk. They should not be used concurrently.
Photosensitization (Light Sensitivity): The hypericin substance in St. John's wort can make the skin excessively sensitive to the sun and UV rays. You should not expose yourself to the sun immediately after applying St. John's wort oil to your skin; otherwise, skin discoloration and severe sunburn may occur. Applying it as a nighttime treatment is the safest method.
